Ta-Da.... my opera cake. This little cake was a labor of love. Today is the big reveal for the May Daring Bakers Challenge, and boy was it a big one Tying to fit this in between the art shows, yearbook deadline and making all the costumes fr the school play was a daring challenge in itself! . Four women teamed together to host this challenge. Cream Puffs in Venice, La Mia Cucina, Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie, and Whiskful. The recipe is a combo of two recipes from two cookbooks - Dorie Greenspan’s Paris Sweets and Tish Boyle and Timothy Moriarty’s Chocolate Passion.
I lucked out and got some almond meal/flour at Trade Joe's. I made my wonderful hubby stop at the out of the way store on our journey to see the new Indiana Jones movie.
The cake layers came together came together easily, and I decided to stick with a fairly simple vanilla/white chocolate combo, that my rather plain hubby would enjoy.
The buttercream tastes great. I was a little worried when at first it looked a tad runny, but alas it came together and after a little time in the fridge it firmed up.
I couldn't resist mixing up the white chocolate mousse for the top.... I licked a little off the beater and It was delish.
All in all this was a time consuming challenge, but each part was fairly easy to execute. My hubby hasn't yet tasted the cake, as he had to go to bed early so he can catch all his parolees early in the morning tomorrow. I'm sure it will be a welcome treat after a long day at work tomorrow!
